Equine Massage Therapy

Equine Sports Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue. It is used to enhance performance, prevent injury, aid recovery rates and, achieve optimum performance. The pressures currently exerted on horses in sport, can result in soft tissue injury, muscle tension, stiffness or soreness. Massage Therapy can go a long way in alleviating, preventing and treating these problems.
Benefits for the horse include:-
  • Increased flexibility and joint movement
  • Improved co-ordination and stride length
  • An increase in muscle elasticity
  • Increased circulation
  • Stress control
  • Relaxation and comfort
  • Increased rate of healing
    It can also:-
  • Decrease post-exercise muscle soreness
  • Help prevent muscle strain
  • Provide an excellent pre-exercise regime

Massage Therapy can facilitate healing and shorten the recovery period. By preventing muscle atrophy, joint stiffness and maintaining muscle suppleness and tone it is of great benefit to horses on box rest.

Maintenance of Peak Condition and Prevention of Injuries

Keeping your horse in peak physical condition will help improve performance, reduce the occurrence of injuries and induce a feeling of well being. Massage Therapy on a regular basis is a beneficial contributory factor in giving your horse the optimum chance to stay fit and perform at his best.

 Preparation and Post Competition Care

Massage therapy is effective in keeping your horse relaxed. It can be beneficial in preparing for competition.

“The real place of massage is to prepare the body for exercise, thereby enhancing performance and preventing injury; and to reduce muscle fatigue and ensure a rapid return to normal,” . . . Mary Bromiley.

Have you ever played a sport one day and suffered the consequences the next?
Well, it’s the same for horses. Massage Therapy can help reduce that feeling of muscle soreness.  Massage can be used to prevent and overcome a wide range of problems.

I am committed to ongoing research and study into the benefits of Massage and Manipulation. I enjoy a high degree of success and am delighted to have many satisfied customers who are happy to endorse my methods.

What I do

I take a holistic view of the horse. I carefully consider all the possible causes and effects of problems prior to treatment.

The initial consultation lasts about 1hr15mins. During this time I will discuss all concerns with the owner, assess the horse (this will include watching him ridden / lunged /trotted up as appropriate) to pinpoint any abnormalities, tension, stiffness, muscle spasms or tenderness and take a detailed case history. I then massage the entire horse concentrating on the identified problem areas.

After treating the horse in a quiet calm atmosphere, I give comprehensive feed back and advise on management and care.
Follow up visits usually last 1hour.

How often?

This varies from horse to horse and is dependent on the problem. Some cases respond immediately. More longstanding problems may require more treatments.

A regular massage benefits the horse in much the same way as it does ourselves.

Some riders favour pre or post competition treatments to optimize the horse’s chance of success and to minimize the risk of injury.
